Made by the National String started in 1897. Up through the 1960’s Black Diamond Strings were available in music stores and all sorts of other places. Because of wide spread availability they were by far the most popular. They were sold in a black cardboard box as featured on our coffee mug, with each string in a red envelope. They didn’t have gauges in fact none did, but they were available in singles.

Years ago we bought the entire inventory of a defunct music store there were more than a thousand sets of old Black Diamond Strings for violin, guitar, banjo, mandolin and who knows what else. It took over 15 years to sell them all off.
