Jules Levy was a cornetist teacher and composer, Born April 24, 1838 in London, according to legend his family couldn’t afford an instrument so Levy began learning cornet with only the mouthpiece After immigrating to the United States, he began his musical career as a cornet soloist and was billed as, The Worlds greatest Cornetist. He was widely regarded as top tier, although some might dispute the claim of World’s Greatest. He was a member of Patrick Gilmores band for several years, performing with them at the, 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. In 1876 he was also a tester and promoter for C.G. Conn, manufacturer of musical instruments. A famous rivalry existed between Levy and Matthew Arbuckle encouraged by Patrick Gilmore. He was probably the first cornetist to be recorded, by participating in a public demonstration of Thomas Edison‘s tinfoil phonograph. He later recorded commercially for Victor Records and Columbia Records. Jules Levy died November 28, 1903 in Chicago at the age of 65.
