Matthew Arbuckle was born in Scotland 1828, into a musical family. At the age of 13 Arbuckle joined the British Army as a musician. He served with the, 26th Cameriorians, during the, Opium War, in China and the, Sikh War, in India. Upon returning to England he studied cornet with Herman Koenig. It may have been ambition or simply being shot at, but Arbuckle decided army life wasn’t for him. Sometime in the in the late 1850’s Arbuckle deserted, and relocated to North America to become a professional cornetist. He was a great success and eventually came to play with Jules Levy in the Patrick Gilmore Band.
In 1853 he moved to Canada, becoming a cornet soloist, bagpiper and drum major with the Royal Scottish Regiment of Canada. In 1857 he became a member of the Troy Brass Band in New York. Isaac Fiske heard Arbuckle play with the Troy Band and persuaded him to join Fiske’s Cornet Band of Worcester. Arbuckle remained in Worcester for three years marching at the head of Fiske’s band.
When the renown Gilmore Band visited Worcester in 1860, Patrick Gilmore was so impressed by Arbuckle that Gilmore felt he had to have him in his band. Arbuckle played solo cornet at the National Peace Jubilee of 1869 and the World Peace Jubilee of 1872, both held in Boston and organized by Patrick S. Gilmore.
In 1880, he became the musical director and bandmaster for the Ninth Regiment in New York. He held this position until his death in May 1883, at the age of 55.
Levy and Arbuckle rivalry
Jules Levy and Arbuckle were cornet soloist’s in Patrick Gilmore’s band. They developed an immediate rivalry which Gilmore exploited. In 1879 he billed them both soloist during a series of concerts at Madison Square Garden.
